Burning Theorsa

Session 01: The City by the Sea

Situation

The Duke’s agents have arrived at the port city of Dwyr Tywyll on a misty morning, only to find a contingent of the Usurper’s army, laden with gear and supplies enough for a long journey, already at the city gates, awaiting entry.

Play Report

Upon arrival at Dwyr Tywyll, the party finds a steady stream of the King’s guards, long and thick like a snake, entering the city gates. Erring on the side of caution, the party chooses to cover up the Duke’s crest & colors that they wear and enter the city unnoticed. Out of fear that, with the number of soldiers present, lodgings will be scarce, they find an inn with room.

Sir Madoc immediately heads to the docks to seek out Seamus Timothy, the local drunk whose big mouth is going to out the Old Faith. Sir Madoc happens to find Seamus just as the city guard is arresting him (due to a failed circles roll). Madoc manages to bribe the guards for time alone with Seamus, “just to talk”. When words fail to convince the drunkard to mind his mouth, violence does the trick.

Moya and Eogan meanwhile venture out to find a ship to convey them to the shores of Kashkir. (Failed Circles) They manage to find the first mate of a ship accepting passengers, however Moya (With Pirate-Wise) deduces that First Mate Liam, crew member of the Black Hand, is offering them passage on a pirate ship. Moya figures that riding with pirates is probably the safest and cheapest way to get to Kashkir. Liam names a price of 35 silver (Ob 3) but Eogan offers to cook and Moya offers the skills of herself and the knights, and haggles Liam down to 5 silver (1 Ob), which Eogan manages to pay with no problem.

Back at the inn, Sir Madoc doesn’t take the news of their booked vessel too poorly, and the party enjoys dinner and drink. Their quiet evening is interrupted however by three boisterous and drunk King’s guards, who, upon seeing the party sporting the Duke’s colors, proceed to call them cowards and losers (But in the nicest way…) Eogan and Moya begin to drink with the soldiers, managing to slip their drinks into the soldier’s cups while the soldiers aren’t looking, effectively drinking much, much less than their ale mates. In their drunken revelry, the soldiers let it slip that Dwyr Tywyll is teeming with soldiers for the usurper king’s “holy war”. Supposedly, there exists a crown that was worn by the first king of Theorsa that has been missing for generations. King Kentigern has decided to send as many men as it takes into Kashkir to reclaim the crown and return it to Theorsa.

All goes well until they insist upon toasting the King and Sir Madoc the Blunt makes a stand, claiming that Bryn Kentigern, the Usurper King, is no king of his. A brawl ensues with Sir Madoc beating the drunks into unconciousness. The party then hauls the beaten soldiers into the stable’s at Moya’s request. She asks for a sigil of the old gods, and Sir Madoc sketches the sign of a goddess of Death. Once Madoc escorts Eogan back into the inn, Moya brands the sigil into the back of the soldier’s hands. She had intended to make it appear that the soldiers were faithful to the old gods and therefore severely complicate their lives (they did call her a coward), however she mixes up her traditions and religious rituals and instead starts a rumor that there is a death cult in town targeting the King’s men.

Session 02 - An Immanent Threat?

Situation

After a tussle at the bar between Sir Madoc, and the subsequent failed attempt at misdirection by Moya, the Dwyr Tywyll city guard has started investigation into the targeting of the king’s soldiers by a murderous cult. There’s still another day before the pirate vessel Black Hand sails for Kashkir, but all the activity in the city certainly can’t make for a quiet getaway.

Play Report

The session opened by focusing on Sir Baldric as his story of the first day in Dwyr Tywyll was untold. (To influence a link test) Sir Baldric spent the first day in the port city searching the rumor mill and his upbringing to find a valid, socially acceptable reason to challenge Sir Catamere to a duel to the death. Sir Baldric recalls a time that Sir Catamere dared make a pass at Duke Roderick’s sister and decides that it is sufficient impetus to challenge Catamere on.

Upon returning to the inn (Pre-brawl) it is revealed to the party that Sir Baldric intends to murder Sir Catamere and steal his identity. Baldric fears that his noble visage will cause massive complications during the trip to Kashkir and throughout the search for Owain Aneurin, therefore he believes it wise to challenge another knight to a fight to the death, in the streets, and steal his identity after he’s slain. Eogan Ninian, as a peaceful man of the cloth, does his best to dissuade Baldric from his plan. Moya settles for convincing Baldric to kill Catamere away from any possible witnesses. Eogan and Baldric face off, with Baldric emerging victorious and determined to kill Catamere and steal his crest. Eogan refuses to help but (sucessfully) blesses Baldric to aid in his mission.

The morning post-bar fight, the party is awoken by the sounds of activity in the hall, the sounds of soldiers knocking on doors, one by one. Moya manages to hear enough to tell that they’re looking for the people who beat up and branded the soldiers. Facing jumping out of the window or attempting to talk their way out, the party goes with the latter. After hiding Eogan (and presumably Sir Madoc “The Blunt” who missed this session) in the wardrobe, Moya feigns nude under the covers while Baldric answers the door. Despite the innkeeper’s insistence that theirs is the right room, Moya’s “Illicit affair” act and Baldric’s “I demand respect and discretion!” attitude convince the soldiers, who move on.

Utilizing Moya’s ability to write and his own etiquette, Sir Baldric composes a letter to Sir Catamere, enticing him to come on a hunt by implying it would be rude to not accept. Moya delivers the letter and discovers that Catamere is now Captain of the Guard as well. They meet at the city gates and ride off into the wilderness to “hunt” with Moya accompanying to keep an eye on Baldric.

Eogan meanwhile takes the task of securing new lodgings upon himself. He books rooms at the only inn with vacancy and out of the way of the soldiers, the Rat Hole. Being the man of the cloth such as he is, he does all he can to help the innkeeper, basically forcing his good will upon him. All the innkeeper can think to have Eogan do is deal with a pesky leper who keeps coming around The Hole.

Once away from the city, Baldric taunts Catamere into a fight, with Catamere answering in kind concerning the captivity of Baldric’s younger brother. Moya readies a spell, but does not take any action, instead waits to see if her brother can handle Catamere on his own. Baldric begins a formal duel with Catamere (Fight!), both men having equal armor and weapons. Blows were exchanged, with Baldric landing two severe hits on Catamere. Once his opponent was downed, Baldric finished him and took the decorations of his identity and rank from the corpse. Moya then polished off the lunch she packed while she let Baldric dig the grave.

Eogan returns to the inn to make good on his promise to help the innkeep and finds the leper present. As a good priest would, Eogan decides to ask the gods to cure the leper. They go to the church of Plomae where Eogan prays for the leprosy to be lifted (Faith test). Instead, the god decides that to heal, Eogan must walk a day in the stricken’s shoes. He infects Eogan with advanced leprosy which will last through the next day (You know. The day they’re suppose to board the pirate ship.)

Session 03 - On A Black Tide
That there's the Black Hand...or, Will Be.

Situation

The Black Hand sails upon the tide. The Usurper’s army, meanwhile, goes on the hunt for the pagans who attacked their men, now that their captain, Sir Catamere, has gone missing. People suspected of being of the Old Faith are being hauled in for questioning left and right. The whole of Dwyr Tywyll is on high alert for treasonous activity.

Session Report

The crew is stirred from their respite in The Rathole by a commotion outside. Out of the window, they can see soldiers dragging people out of their huts and hovels and lining them up in the road. Sir Baldric decides to uncover the meaning of this and storms out into the street, planning to use his mark of privilege to get answers. Moya, secretly sworn to protection Sir Baldric, follows as well. Upon inquiry, the soldiers inform Baldric that some of their men have been beaten and branded and now another (presumably Sir Catamere) has gone missing. Rumor is that pagans are responsible and the soldiers are rounding up potential suspects and general low-lifes in the hopes of getting some answers. Sir Baldric proceeds to rant and rave about being a noble in such a climate, having to leave an inn due to soldiers and every place being filled up with soldiers and now soldiers causing a racket in the early morning outside the shit hole he finally found a room at, and is that any sort of experience for a man of his bearing?

Moya realizes exactly what consequences her revenge on the soldiers has caused and seeks to diffuse the situation and rumor before true harm can befall any of the people the soldiers are rounding up. She fabricates a lie to tell the guards, that she has it on very good authority that the perpetrators of the branding were merely bored kids who had found the symbol on a scrap of paper. She talks the soldiers into letting the people go and dropping the matter. Baldric continues to back her up by ranting about being a noble in such conditions, when Sir Madoc “The Blunt” empties the chamber pot out of the window onto Baldric, to drive Baldric’s point home. With that, the soldiers leave as Baldric storms back up to the room.

Things go downhill fast from there. Baldric charged Madoc, aiming to throw him out the window. Eogan Ninian readied to intercede and hopefully stop the fight. Madoc aimed to step out of Baldric’s way and instead let Baldric exit stage Window. Moya tried to cast The Fear to distract everyone long enough to prevent a fight but she reacted too slowly. Baldric made his charge, Eogan didn’t intercede in time, and Madoc managed to get Baldric out of the window. About that time, Moya’s spell went off, causing Madoc to stand and drool in the corner while Eogan followed Baldric out of the window. Eogan, under the stress of everything and now The Fear, went into fits in the road under the window, speaking in tongues. As Moya joined them to get them back to the room, a little boy broke off from the gathering crowd and ran, presumably to tell somebody of their whereabouts. The party then decided (wisely) to split in a hurry but, not meeting the Black Hand until midnight, agreed to meet back up at a pub on the docks.

Sir Baldric, being as full of himself as he was a noble, insisted upon showering off the filth before leaving. Moya stayed behind as well, expecting people to show up looking for them. Instead, Baldric engaged her in a lengthy discussion about gaining the respect of the party and, more specifically, Sir Madoc the Blunt. They argue for a time, with Baldric insistent that the others should just follow him, as he was a knight and his father is the Duke. Moya made the point that Madoc was a knight as well, and unlike Baldric he had to work for the title. Moya eventually convinces Baldric that he has to give respect if he wants to receive it, but also promises to help pave the way between the two men.

Moya beat Baldric to the pub, and asked Madoc and Eogan to give the other knight another chance, which they begrudgingly agreed to. Madoc bought Baldric a drink, and Baldric sucked it up enough to ask Madoc’s advice on matters at hand. Eventually, the party finally gets around to asking Eogan about his blatant leprosy, and they decide to keep him covered up and below decks for the duration of their voyage. Baldric observes that leprosy is no gift from a god and Eogan should reconsider his faith, but no consensus is reached.

Come midnight, the party heads to the docks to meet up with First Mate Liam, the man with whom Moya secured passage to Kashkir. Liam quickly hands off rope with grappling hooks to Madoc, points out a ship, and says “There she is, The Black Hand! Or…will be.” The pirates had picked out the fastest ship in the Usurper’s fleet with the intention of stealing it for their own use. Eogan and Baldric can not abide a hostile take over and convince the pirates to try it their way first, at the unbeknownst price of later being tried for mutiny in front of the crew.

First, Eogan steals uniforms in an attempt to make the pirates look half official. Madoc then bribes the dock workers/security to get them out of the way. Baldric next takes charge and, giving commands under Sir Catamere’s crest, orders all crew off the boat and onto the dock for inspection, touting the pirates as a third party inspection crew. Moya tells the king’s men that the inspection crew will watch them tie their knots and has them untie the anchoring ropes. She then casts the fear, scattering men every which way. To Baldric’s disdain, the pirates grabbed and stabbed the soldiers as they could.

Once on the boat, the pirates hurriedly sack the quarters as well as ready the ship for immediate departure. Coming up from below, the pirates announce that they have found an old man stowed away, claiming to be riding with the king’s men to Kashkir on a research mission. The pirates speak of not taking kindly to stow-aways and as they present their captive, it is none other than Houdin, Moya’s sorcery teacher, whom she was avoiding in Dwyr Tywyll, as she has possession of his spell book.

Session 04 - Sailing West

Situation

The Black Hand – newly acquired from the Theorsan army – slips quietly into the dark harbor. As the crew makes ready for the journey to Kashkir, Captain Cailan accuses Sir Baldric of leaving too many loose ends. Meanwhile, the crew hauls Moya’s former master, Houdin, from his hiding spot below deck. His eyes widen as he recognizes her. Eogan’s affliction, temporary as it may be, has yet to be noticed by the pirate crew.

In the distance, the torches and lanterns of Dwyr Tywyll slip away into the dark. Kashkir lies months ahead.
